My name is Gemma Atkins and I'm against the city of Granby implementing a law whereby people who are caught insulting police personnel can be fined anywhere from $100 to $1000. This has been highlighted by a recent report by CBS

As a citizen of Canada, I firmly believe that law will not benefit anyone. If there is a verifiable reason for a 'complaint' from a citizen's point of view, there is no reason for the municipality of Granby decide what I can and can't say, be it person or online. Moreover, this law will only cost the Canadian government as well as taxpayers a lot of unnecessary expenses used to track down the individual who has been reported making insulting remarks on social media channels. These expenses can be used instead to improve the country and well-being of Canadian citizens, instead of being spent on a potentially fruitless pursuit of someone who made a derogatory remark on Facebook or Twitter, for example.

I would like to rally on the people of Canada to support my being against the enacting of senseless law, so let's make this fundraiser a success by supporting CAFE - the Canadian Association of Free Expression.

Thank you,
Gemma Atkins - Social Media Curator for "Best of Tumblr" Page
